Joel Walters -- short biography

My research deals with sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of bilingual acquisition, processing and use in children and adults. Studies have focused on narrative discourse, codeswitching, discourse markers, fluency and family language policy in typical and impaired language, including work on specific language impairment, aphasia and schizophrenia.
I have a BA in Sociology from Dartmouth College and an Ed.D. in Applied Psycholinguistics from Boston University. Recent work has been published in Applied Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, International Journal of Bilingualism, Language Learning, and Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism. Funding has come from the Israel Science Foundation (ISF), the German-Israel Research Foundation (GIF), the German Ministry of Education (BMBF) and the Netherlands-Israel Research Programme (NIRP). I have mentored 50+ MAs, PhDs and post-docs. I have reviewed grant proposals for the Israel Science Foundation, the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network and NSF (National Science Foundation).

In the US, I directed the Multilingual-Multicultural Doctoral Fellowship Program at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana; in Israel I served as director of the English as a Foreign Language Program, chair of the English Department and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Currently I am the academic director of Bar-Ilan's programs at the Western Galilee College in Acco. I have sat on the advisory boards of several Israeli colleges and I chaired the Israeli Ministry of Education Committee for English in the public schools. I am currently a member of the boards of the ‘Eliashiv' Ethiopian Immigrant Association Board and the Hesder Yeshiva in Acco.
